- Cineuropa: "A low-budget project, The Forest of the Lost Souls is further proof that determination is capable of overcoming production obstacles, turning a difficult project into an enjoyable film that thumbs its nose at financial restrictions thanks to a captivating script. Lopes really stands out as a young filmmaker who is able to bring together several of his recognisable cinephilic references in order to bring to fruition a personal and carefully crafted debut project."

- Screen Anarchy: "The violence is quick and savage, yet intimate. It is not aiming for gore and shock but the feel of real-life violence. Understanding some physical limitations of his psycho killer (read - not a supernatural psycho like those in the 80s) Lopes admittedly had to rethink how his killer dispatched their victims, which helps keep it further grounded in the realm of the possible and uncomfortably real."

- Dread Central: "Performances from both Love and Mota were genuine and held your sympathetic ear, and fit nicely into their respective stories – at times, it felt as if you were taking that walk into the potential afterlife, and Lopes should be commended for his framing and eyes when it came to certain avenues that he used to lay out the direction in which the movie was executed. In closing, I can recommend the film as a one-timer for those who are wanting to check out a gray, moody and contemplative film that attacks a very serious subject…and for those who want a little murder, it’s there for you too, ya demented freaks."
